CHICAGO— The Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s (CSO) world-renowned brass section is featured on Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass Live, the newest release by the Orchestra’s award-winning record label, CSO Resound.
Works by Gabrieli, Bach, Grainger, Prokofiev, Walton and Revueltas are showcased on this recording and will be available in hybrid SACD, standard CD and digital download formats. The download is for sale exclusively at iTunes beginning September 6, and in stores in Europe and Japan on September 22. The album will be released in the U.S. and Canada on September 26. Beginning October 6, the download is available through other digital music services including Amazon, Rhapsody, eMusic and HDtracks.
The repertoire on Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass Live—the 13th release on the CSO Resound label—was recorded during the CSO Brass’ subscription concerts on December 16, 17 and 18, 2010 at Symphony Center in Chicago, Illinois.
The tracks on the release include William Walton’s Crown Imperial, Coronation March; Giovanni Gabrieli’s Sacrae Symphoniae No. 6: Sonata Pian e forte, Canzon duodecimi toni à 10, and Canzon septimi toni à 8 (No. 2); a transcription of J.S. Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor (originally for organ); arrangements of Percy Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy; Silvestre Revueltas’ Sensemayà; and three movements from Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet.
Four members of the CSO brass section (Dale Clevenger, principal horn; Jay Friedman, principal trombone; Michael Mulcahy, trombone; Mark Ridenour, assistant principal trumpet) conduct on the recording, which also includes the CSO’s percussion section and guest musicians.
