Post Using a Bariton Horn for Practice?
on: September 1, 2011, 16:59

Hello trombone friends! I was pondering this question the other day, I thought some multi-instrumentalists in the group may have a few good responses.

Would owning a baritone horn be a good practice tool for a trombone player? I'm thinking about using it to extend high range without having to worry about tuning, positions, etc. Kind of removing that from the equation in order to work on embouchure/stamina in a vacuum.

My initial response was "it can't hurt, right?", but can it? Is learning positions and tuning so crucial to playing that it shouldn't be separated? Is the resistance/feel of the horn so different that it wouldn't help? Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

I'm currently trying to get my hands on an American marching-style baritone, but I'm interested in getting it for doubling on for jazz! I suppose if you use the same mouthpiece, it can't hurt! It's always good to test out the brain, working out tunes on the valves that you only know on the slide.
