How to prepare for a pit show.

Have you ever had a mute fall out of your horn? Yeah – I have, it needed a thicker cork to fit the bell properly. When did I find this out? Ahm… In probably the worst, saddest part of a musical. The mute was new to me and I had no idea that it wasn’t gripping properly… And so a falling harmon, beside an SM58 makes some sound in a theatre! Cork and re-cork your mutes – it is easy to do, I will write an article on this for you BM readers!

Some order should be injected here. 5 more tips.

1. You can always need more in a show:
– more mutes
– more arms/hands (mute/instrument changes)
– pencils
– light
– stands
– water

2. Sandbags are common enough in the theatre – they are super useful for keeping troublesome stands in check. Bear in mind that dancers/actors have been known to bump stuff like this (ORLY?)

3. Prepare the music in advance, listen to the show, check tempos. If you a depping you should try to catch a show or 2 before you take over.

4. Arrive early – give yourself plenty of time to warmup, setup your playing area (it can get shuffled about between shows/days). Doing breathing exercises and taking the time to relax in your performance environment is conducive to a good show.

5. Enjoy the show, make some new contacts …and call a cab after the final night cast party 😉
